He was already the head of a covert agency. - Dutch government appoints new leader.

Dick Schoof (67), who was previously a member of the Labor Party, is now set to take over from Mark Rutte (57) as Prime Minister of the Netherlands, according to Dutch newspaper "De Telegraaf." This puts an end to weeks of speculation. Initial reports mentioned that election winner Geert Wilders (60) had planned to support Social Democrat Ronald Plasterk (67), but Plasterk withdrew from the race due to political challenges.

Schoof is well-versed in the areas of security and immigration policy. Before joining the Justice Ministry, he was the head of the intelligence service and was responsible for counter-terrorism in the country. He also served as Director for Immigration Issues, where he dealt with significant legislative processes.

As the next Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Schoof will have to contend with a right-wing coalition government. The future government parties include Wilders' Freedom Party (PVV), the right-liberal VVD that current Prime Minister Rutte belongs to, the new right-conservative NSC, and the right-populist Farmers' Party BBB.

A tentative plan involves a coalition with a cabinet made up of nearly half non-partisan experts.

In the November 22 election, Wilders' anti-Islam party secured 37 of the 150 parliamentary seats.

In order to facilitate a right-wing government, Wilders had presented demands such as a mosque ban and was willing to give up the position of Prime Minister. The leaders of the other three parties also remain in parliament.

During the summer of 2023, there was a disagreement within the center-right coalition of Prime Minister Rutte regarding asylum policy. Rutte announced his decision to step down from politics, making him a frontrunner for the position of NATO Secretary General.
