Dutch gambling establishments are required to expose their sponsorship agreements.
The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) Demands Sponsorship Details from Gambling Businesses
As reported by the gambling news source iGB [English link], gambling companies in the Netherlands need to deliver the required information about their sponsorship arrangements to the KSA by March 29, 2024.
Sponsorship of events in the Netherlands by gambling businesses is still valid until July 1, 2024, while sports sponsorship continues until July 1, 2025. New sponsorship agreements between gambling companies and sports clubs have not been permitted since July 1, 2023. These deadlines only apply to sponsorship contracts that were signed before July 1, 2023.
A blanket ban on gambling advertisements on Dutch television and radio has been enforced since 2023. However, gambling advertisements are still allowed on streaming services and social media.
What Details Must Gambling Businesses Share with the KSA?
The purpose of the gambling sponsorship ban is to aid in the prevention of gambling addiction in the Netherlands. For sports sponsorship agreements, gambling companies are required to inform the KSA if it involves a sports team, stadium, or other organization. They must also specify whether it's jersey advertising or ads on stadium billboards.
For media sponsorship, the type of advertising (TV or radio) needs to be stated. The frequency of advertising spots and the number of broadcasts they appear in are also required information.
Gambling companies operating event sponsorship in the Netherlands must disclose the respective events and type of advertising. Online casinos and sports betting providers should also provide details about their measures to combat gambling addiction. Last year, funded research projects on gambling addiction within the gambling industry were initiated in the Netherlands to identify the causes of harmful gambling behavior and develop suitable therapeutic methods.
Gambling Advertising Remains Legal in Germany
Unlike the Netherlands, there is no ban on gambling advertisements in Germany. Only between 6 am and 9 pm is advertising for gambling providers prohibited.
Last year, however, Burkhard Blienert, the German federal government's drug commissioner, advocated for a ban on sports betting advertising during the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany. The Alliance Against Sports Betting Advertising even suggested a step-by-step ban on advertising for betting providers. The future of gambling advertising in Germany remains uncertain.
The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) is interested in this information due to their efforts to prevent gambling addiction in the Netherlands. Gambling businesses need to share details about their sponsorship agreements, including the type of advertising, frequency of spots, and number of broadcasts.
Following the KSA's demand, gambling companies should disclose the specific events they're sponsoring and provide details about their measures to combat gambling addiction, as funded research projects on this topic are ongoing in the Netherlands.
