Telekom Baskets Bonn Wins Play-in Game Against MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg
Ludwigsburg began the play-in game with four consecutive league losses, and they got off to a poor start. They fell behind 0:7 almost immediately. The arena wasn't sold out, prompting Dyn expert Bastian Doreth to comment, "I'm a bit surprised. But it's also during the week."
Dyn commentator Chris Schmidt expressed excitement over Bonn's early lead: "They're firing on all cylinders here in the first five-and-a-half minutes! Holy cow! 17:4! I had high expectations, but this is incredible!"
Bonn dominated the first quarter, ending it with a commanding 32:13 lead. There was little doubt about the eventual winner by this point. They went into the break with a significant 51:25 advantage.
During the first half, Bonn's Glynn Watson laughed at Dyn, "I don't know why we always play so well against Ludwigsburg!" Ludwigsburg's Assistant Coach Dan Ryan replied, "They punish us for our mistakes! But we're not thinking about Thursday yet. We just want to recover and find our game again now."
Ludwigsburg made a strong comeback in the third quarter, winning it 28:17. This helped narrow the gap to 53:68. However, it wasn't enough for a miraculous turnaround.
During the broadcast, Schmitt and Doreth queried the Dyn audience if any team had ever previously recovered from a 30-point deficit in the history of the German leagues' playoffs.
Midway through the third quarter, Doreth surprised Schmidt with an unexpected message from Anton Gavel, Ulm's head coach, who's moving to Bamberg next season. Gavel shared a story about Ulm leading Göttingen by 30 points in the previous year, only for Göttingen to save themselves during overtime.
