A 26-year-old man slams into two police vehicles. - During a pursuit on the A1 highway, four police officers sustain injuries.
On a Sunday evening, law enforcement officers at the Grundbergsee service station on Lower Saxony's A1 freeway spotted a VW Touran with stolen license plates. They intended to investigate both the driver (26) and his companions inside the vehicle. However, instead of complying, the driver revved up the engine and drove off!
This kickstarted a frantic chase that persisted for a remarkable 20 minutes.
He sped down the freeway for 20 minutes
The fleeing culprit switched lanes multiple times on the highway.
One witness explained, "Suddenly, the dark car was right behind me; I thought he was going to crash into the back of my car. Yet, he abruptly slammed on the brakes and swerved past me on the right, driving across the shoulder."
A short distance down the road, both the pursuit vehicles and the escape car came to a screeching halt. It seemed that the high-speed chaser had lost control of his car and collided with two police cars.
The driver and his passenger, as well as four police officers, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Additionally, a small child might have been in the car at the time of the chase, as a Maxi-Cosi baby seat was found lying on the pavement next to the getaway car.
The damaged vehicles forced a partial closure of the A1 while the incident was being probed.
Criminal charges have been initiated against the 26-year-old from Bremen for theft, fuel fraud, forgery, driving without a license, negligent infliction of bodily harm, and illegal street racing.
