Judgment rendered. - Duo cleared of child cruelty charges

A couple from Mettlach, accused of mistreating their wards, has been acquitted by the Saarbrücken Regional Court. The court's spokesperson confirmed this to the German Press Agency on Tuesday, stating that the public prosecutor's office had even previously requested an acquittal.

The couple was cleared "due to factual reasons," which means that after reviewing all the available evidence, it was determined that the crimes had not been committed with the level of certainty necessary for a conviction. Testimonies contradicted each other.

The pair was facing charges of torturing and abusing four former foster children, who came to live with them when they were six and seven years old, following their biological mother's death. The man is also accused of sexually abusing a girl.

The prosecution claimed the children were subjected to physical abuse, including being beaten and kicked by the foster mother. They were also denied warm meals and were not allowed to talk to each other without permission. Punishments included forcing them to stand outside in their underwear or naked for hours, as well as making them eat cat excrement.

The woman (53) stated during the trial that she couldn't believe the accusations against her. She asserted that she would never harm any of her kids, whether biological or adopted. The defense lawyer argued that the allegations might have been influenced by the children's experiences with their biological mother.
