The long-absent blue pipes in Dresden's downtown area will be progressively taken down starting May of this year. By the end of 2024, they'll be completely removed. These pipes served a crucial function during the construction of various structures in the area, including those near Neumarkt and Postplatz, Stadtforum and the recent "Quartier Ringstraße." Their primary purpose was to lower the water table and maintain dry construction sites.

Dresden's Construction Mayor, Stephan Kühn (Alliance 90/The Greens), has stated that these pipes have become a common sight for some residents in the city center, with many people even wondering if they're art installations. He added, "Now, there's more walkway space available."

The removal process will start on Wilsdruffer Straße and proceed towards Pirnaischer Platz, followed by the dismantling in the direction of Ostra-Allee. The water extracted from the excavation pits usually flows through the pipes into the district cooling center at the Kulturpalast, where it's utilized to cool nearby hotels, shops, and apartment buildings. Afterwards, it's returned to the groundwater. Any excess water that cannot be reintroduced is discharged into the Elbe.
