Southern regions bracing for weather onslaught - Dramatic hail falls in Bavaria.
Heavy rainfall throughout the night in Niederbayern, located near Straubing, resulted in flooded cellars and streets. Flooding was also reported in Oberbayern, as per a police representative.
In the Alpine areas, particularly between Füssen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, residents encountered intense hailstorms. In the village of Ried am Forggensee, a snowplow had to clear hail from the road. A cyclist described the scene: "It's like a ski resort out there." Approximately 50 centimeters of hail covered the nearby B 16.
In Gars am Inn, a sawmill caught fire later Monday evening. Police theorized a lightning strike as the culprit behind the blaze. Power outages affected certain areas of Augsburg on Monday evening due to a lightning strike as well.
On the A7 autobahn in Lower Saxony, near Göttingen, heavy rain caused traffic disruptions.
A car lost traction on the wet road and came to a halt in the center lane, getting struck by a truck, reported a police spokesperson. Aquaplaning was also experienced on the road at the time.
The weather is expected to become more settled on Tuesday, but the German Weather Service warns of possible downpours and individual thunderstorms from the Baltic Sea to the eastern portion of the Middle German Uplands until morning.
The storms and showers in the east and southeast will gradually head north-eastwards throughout the day, with cloudier conditions dominating the skies. In the west and northwest, clouds will thicken in the afternoon and rain is possible in the evening.
