DraftKings data confirms F1's growing popularity among bettors
Boosted by the Sin City event, last week's Las Vegas Grand Prix became the most heavily bet ever for many sportsbooks on the Formula One race.
This sentiment also extends to online sports betting, with DraftKings noting that the first Formula One (F1) race in Las Vegas in four decades was the most wagered Formula 1 race in the company’s history, regardless of A bet in terms of quantity or quantity. By both metrics, the Las Vegas Grand Prix surpasses the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, which previously held the DraftKings F1 record.
Since the Nov. 18 game on the Las Vegas Strip, gaming companies (especially those with brick-and-mortar locations and Internet operations in Nevada) have frequently released data confirming that the top bettors here are their respective Historical F1 races. DraftKings went a step further, releasing data confirming Formula 1's growth among domestic bettors.
F1 could be the next big thing for sports betting and bettors
Motorsports, including Formula 1, fall into the “other” category of sports betting, which is the category behind football, basketball and baseball in betting popularity. However, data shows that Formula 1 is one of the most important providers among punters.
While American football may always be the king of handles in the United States, and soccer (the other kind of football) may continue to attract the most bets in Europe, it's clear that F1 is on the rise among bettors, and a big part of that progress Made in recent years.
In terms of handling, nine of DraftKings' top ten all-time F1 races have been held since the start of the 2022 season, six of which have taken place this year. The group includes the Las Vegas Grand Prix and the Miami Grand Prix - two of the three U.S. races in the series.
According to the operator, the top 10 F1 races measured by number of bets on DraftKings have all taken place since 2020, including seven this year. Those seven games include games in Las Vegas and Miami.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix was impressive for DraftKings
As mentioned above, sportsbooks often tout the Las Vegas Grand Prix's record-breaking bet volumes and settlements, but many of the companies that boast operate brick-and-mortar casinos in the Las Vegas Valley.
What makes DraftKings' performance even more notable is that, like its rival FanDuel, it does not accept bets from Nevada, either retail or online. The operator's ability to surpass the previous F1 record without leaving a footprint in Nevada also underlines the series' growing popularity among bettors.
DraftKings was widely expected to enter the Nevada market at some point, but when it came to the F1 race in Las Vegas, it was clear the gaming company didn't need that location to profit from the race.
