DraftKings Abandons Fantasy Football Draft Due to Collusion Fears

DraftKings has canceled a "best ball" fantasy football draft recently, as a user identified cheating.

Known as a leader in the daily fantasy sports (DFS) sector, DraftKings offers season-long competitions for NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball (MLB) with the "best ball" tag. For these contests, teams are drafted through a Snake Draft system and rosters stay intact for the contest period - no roster management is required. There's also no roster overlap as seen in typical DFS events - prizes are handed out after the contest.

A suspicious draft occurred a few days ago, starting with Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson and San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey being the first two picks. The third selection was Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabriel Davis, an unusual choice, and two more questionable selections followed. Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase was then picked in the sixth round, a reasonable spot for him.

As the draft continued, blackburn72419 noticed that nine competitors were deliberately picking weaker players, seemingly intended to allow one participant to build a "super team." The first two picks were made sensibly, but it is unclear if both of them colluded.

DraftKings Promptly Responded

DraftKings swiftly handled the situation and released the following statement on its @DK_Assist Twitter account: "Pursuant to the Terms of Use, the DraftKings Game Integrity Committee has decided to void this contest. We thank you for your patience while DraftKings Game Integrity monitored multiple rounds of the draft to ensure our findings were fair and warranted."

DraftKings and other DFS operators have previously faced cheating allegations, including from their own staff. A high-profile case from January 2020 involved a $1 million prize being taken away from a "winner" who colluded with her husband in a DFS football event.

The colluding couple was Jade Roper Tolbert and Tanner Tolbert, both former contestants on the reality show "The Bachelor."
