Dr. Miriam Adelson of Las Vegas Sands makes her first political donation in approximately two years.
Miriam Adelson, the biggest shareholder of her late husband's Las Vegas Sands casino enterprise, has made her initial political donation since 2021. However, instead of supporting Donald Trump, the politician she and her husband, Sheldon Adelson, invested over $200 million in his 2016 and 2020 campaigns, she put her money elsewhere.
Adelson currently possesses 46% of the Sands corporation, thanks to her $2 billion stock sale in 2021 to attain controlling ownership in the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. As a dedicated Republican and vocal pro-Israel advocate, Miriam maintained her involvement in politics after Sheldon's passing in 2021.
She contributed $1 million to Texas Governor Greg Abbott's (R) reelection campaign and $20 million to GOP congressional committees in 2022, potentially securing favor for commercial casinos in the state.
For most of 2023, Miriam's political contributions were unheard of. But recent filings with the Federal Election Commission show she might make a return to the political landscape before the November 2024 presidential election.
The Sands PAC
Adelson's previous political contribution was an insignificant $8,100 to a California Republican Attorney General's campaign in November 2022. However, her political funds resumed in March with a $5,000 contribution to the Sands PAC (Sands Political Action Committee).
The Sands PAC mainly supports Republican candidates on the federal and state levels. The PAC imposes a cap of $5,000 on each candidate.
Although Adelson's $5,000 donation is modest, it may evidence her intention to intensify her political expenditures. Adelson initially stated she wouldn't back or fund a candidate preferring conservative voters' decision in the 2024 GOP primary.
The primary concluded, and Adelson hasn't aided Trump, who desperately needs funds as contentious lawsuits against him unfold.
From 2011 to 2022, Adelson and her husband collectively donated over $524 million to Republican campaigns and PACs.
Biden's Advantage
Per the FEC, Biden holds a substantial financial advantage over Trump. He has approximately $130.8 million to spend on his 2024 campaign, while Trump is speculated to have around $66.7 million.
Assuming other major Democrat donors, such as George Soros and Michael Bloomberg, don't make sizeable contributions to Biden, Adelson could single-handedly help Trump surpass the incumbent president's funding, depending on the amount of her support.
Trump's campaign may lack support from Americans for Prosperity, a super PAC managed by the Koch network. This right-leaning powerhouse previously endorsed Nikki Haley during the 2024 GOP nomination race. Koch's network is directed by Charles Koch, a wealthy Republican supporter but an opponent of Trump.
