The game witnessed zero resistance, with BVB making reckless mistakes, resulting in a 3-0 deficit within 23 minutes. The trouble: just before the Mainz game started, 1. FC Köln showed a remarkable comeback against Union Berlin (3:2) giving them hope of escaping relegation. As a result, now BVB is the only team heading for relegation. Franz, who has played in several relegation battles (including with Hertha BSC and Eintracht Frankfurt), has a clear viewpoint on the distortion of competition: "I've been through the relegation battles many times, and I agree - it's unfair how those teams are treated."
Mainz still has the opportunity to escape relegation, facing VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga's final matchday. Union Berlin will fight relegation against SC Freiburg, and FC Köln have to prepare for Heidenheim.
