"Concerningly troubling" - Discovered: Prohibited Plasticizers in Sunscreen for Kids

Young skin is extremely vulnerable to outside elements. Excessive UV exposure and sunburns can lead to skin cancer. Therefore, proper sun protection is crucial.

► Öko-Test assessed 25 sunscreens explicitly designed for babies and kids. 8 of them earned the highest ranking of "very good".

Ideal sun creams for kids

As stated in a Brisant report, the optimal sunscreens for children are as follows:

  • Babydream sun spray extra sensitive 50+ (Rossmann)
  • Babylove sun spray sensitive 50+ (DM)
  • Cien Sun Kids sun cream SPF 50 (Lidl)
  • Lavozon Kids sun cream 50 (Müller)
  • Nivea Sun Kids Spray 5in1 50
  • Sundance Kids Sun Spray 50 (DM)
  • Sunozon Kids sun milk 50+ (Rossmann)
  • Tabaluga sun milk for children Sensitive 50 (Edeka/Netto/Budni)

Bevola Kids Sun Cream 50+: Not so good

Kaufland's Bevola Kids sunscreen 50+ received a subpar evaluation in this test.

► The highest concentration of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DnHexP) was detected in this sunscreen. This ingredient, classified as a "substance of very high concern," has been prohibited in cosmetics in the EU since 2019.

DnHexP was also present in these 6 additional children's sunscreens:

  • Lacura Sun Kids Sun Spray SPF50+ (Aldi Süd)
  • Today sun Kids sun cream sensitive 50+ (Rewe)
  • Dado Sens Sun Kids sun cream 50
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics hydrating lotion 50
  • Ladival For Children Sun Protection Milk 50
  • Paediprotect family sun cream 50

No potential health hazards

Emollients are used to create a smoother texture in creams and other products. DnHexP has been categorized as a "substance of very high concern" due to its influence on hormone levels.

► "Based on current research, the DnHexP levels observed do not pose any health risks," states Öko-Test. "To surpass questionable absorption levels through the skin, a small child would need to be slathered with over one kilo of the contaminated sunscreen every day."

Despite the presence of plasticizers, there's no cause for alarm about sunscreens.

To reiterate, the discovery of plasticizers should not steer you away from using sunscreen.
