Charges leveled by 16 females - Did David Copperfield coerce minors into engaging in sexual acts while they were under the influence of drugs?
According to a report in The Guardian, allegations against renowned magician David Copperfield date back from the end of the 1980s to 2014. Some of these claims involve women who were minors at the time, with some as young as 15 years old.
Three of the sixteen women who came forward claimed that Copperfield drugged them and forced them into sexual encounters. The drugs left them unable to fight back or decline his advances.
The newspaper's investigation included interviews with more than 100 people and reviewed court and police records as part of a series of reports.
Some of these alleged victims revealed that they bravely decided to share their experiences only because of the #MeToo movement, which has liberated many victims to come forward with their own stories of mistreatment.
Brittney Lewis, one of these women, first made her accusation public in 2018. She alleged that Copperfield drugged and abused her sexually back in 1988, when she was a 17-year-old model.
Another woman shared her story with The Guardian, describing an incident that occurred in 1993 after a Copperfield show. "I wouldn't have told anyone if I didn't really feel like I was on drugs at the time," she said.
Copperfield denies all claims
Despite these serious claims, Copperfield maintains his innocence. He insists he has never behaved inappropriately towards anyone, let alone minors.
His attorney stated, "Anyone who knows David Copperfield will tell you that these latest allegations are the exact opposite of who David is. Most of these allegations have been made before, and they are just as false now as they were then."
