Angry Hollywood star takes on tech titans - Did ChatGPT appropriate Scarlett Johansson's voice?

The actress who provided the voice for an AI assistant in the sci-fi movie "Her" (2013) shares her concern that the voice created by ChatGPT sounds strikingly similar to her own. Even her friends couldn't tell the difference between her and the machine.

ChatGPT promptly removed the AI character "Sky" from its platform in response.

Reports claim that Scarlett Johansson had been approached by ChatGPT for her involvement with the AI's voice earlier but turned it down. Did the tech company and its CEO, Sam Altman, not take notice of her decision?

Scarlett Johansson Upset by ChatGPT's A.I. Voice

"I was both surprised and upset upon hearing the demo. The AI's voice sounded frighteningly similar to mine, even though I had previously declined their request," she said in a statement.

Altman disagrees, announcing in a public statement, "The voice used for 'Sky' does not belong to Scarlett Johansson, and we did not intend it to mirror hers." However, an update he posted on his blog about 'Sky' only uses the word "her" – possibly hinting at the 2013 film "Her", in which Johansson voiced an AI called Samantha.

Altmann elaborates more: "We recruited the voice actress for 'Sky' before we contacted Johansson. To show respect for Johansson, we have stopped using the AI's voice in our products. We apologize for not communicating better."

Scarlett Johansson Demands Transparency from OpenAI

Johansson has requested in two letters that Altman reveal the specific method used to create the A.I. voice "Sky". Until she receives a satisfactory response, the A.I. will be shut down.

"As society navigates issues of deep fakes, image protection, and identity preservation, clarity is necessary," she stated. "I hope to find a solution through transparency and the implementation of legislation to protect individual rights."
