Dalvin Cook Joins New York Jets as a Free Agent Running Back
Dalvin Cook, a skilled running back with a history of 1,000-yard seasons, has inked a one-year deal with the New York Jets. Valuable incentives could lead to a $8.6 million payday.
The Minnesota Vikings decided to part ways with Cook in the offseason to free up some much-needed cap space. Before joining the Jets, he was considered the top free agent available.
Following his shoulder surgery in February to correct a torn labrum, Cook will likely join the Jets next week.
The New England Patriots secured running back Ezekiel Elliot, leaving Kareem Hunt as the only top running back remaining unsigned. The New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, and Vikings are all considered potential suitors for Hunt. The Saints are in need of additional options in the backfield due to injuries and suspensions, while the Colts are on the lookout for a replacement for their injured star, Jonathan Taylor.
Jets Retain a Strong Presence at RB
The Jets already boasted a robust running back corps with Breece Hall, Michael Carter, and Zonovan Knight. Hall and Knight are both rookies, while Carter is entering his third season with the team.
Cook leaves a noteworthy legacy in Minnesota, having tallied four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons and earning four Pro Bowl invitations. Since 2017, only Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans has surpassed Cook's average of 111 yards per game from scrimmage.
Cook's 2020 season was a milestone year despite being limited to 14 games due to injury. He amassed 1,557 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging a career-best 5.0 yards per carry. He also contributed with 44 receptions and another touchdown.
Coach Robert Saleh expressed enthusiasm about Cook's potential impact, stating, "You don't say no to a great player."
With Cook cast into the Jets lineup, the team's running game looks stronger than ever: "We're a deeper team with Dalvin, and each guy has specific skills," said Saleh. "It's like adding a new element to our offense."
Jets Emerge as Contenders
Last season, the Jets showed promise with the fourth-best scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 18.6 points per game. With a struggling offense that averaged a league-low 17.4 points per game, the team grappled with finding balance.
However, the recent acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers has injected new life into the Jets offense. Additionally, they signed receivers Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman to strengthen their receiving corps.
The signing of Cook garnered limited impact on their futures market. The Jets continue to hold +270 odds to win the AFC East, while their chances of clinching Super Bowl LVIII remain at +1600 and the AFC Championship at +1000 since the merger.
Between Rodgers' arrival and the debut of the "Hard Knocks" series on HBO, the Jets have witnessed increased attention and betting activity.
The Jets finished with a 7-10 record last season. Optimistic fans anticipate significant progress under their new quarterback's leadership.
