Cologne: New Developments Unfold in Shocking Incident - Customs officials confiscate drugs valued at 6 million euros.

Nearly 70 kilograms of cocaine, close to 31 kilograms of marijuana, over 7 kilograms of crystal meth, almost 5 kilograms of amphetamine, and close to 4 kilograms of heroin were confiscated by the Cologne traffic control unit, which tackles drug trafficking through both roads and railways.

Recently, a total of 9 individuals from Slovenia, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, the Netherlands, and Serbia, aged between 25 and 68, were all stopped by customs patrols on their trip from the Netherlands or Belgium on various highways within the Cologne and Bonn region.

These individuals provided conflicting details regarding the purpose and route of their travel, prompting a drug swab test on their hands. The tests indicated contact with illicit substances, leading to a thorough inspection of their vehicles.

The drugs were discovered in concealed spots in the cars, such as behind the dashboard or glove compartment, beneath the hood, and within false bottoms in the trunk or spare tire well. The oldest drug smuggler, a 68-year-old Dutchman, had about 33 kilograms of cocaine, the largest single seizure. He had 30 cocaine bricks in the trunk covered by a heavy metal plate, which only opened when you pressed both the rear window heater button and an attached magnetic switch. The officers found the corresponding magnet dangling from a string on his wrist.

A 24-year-old Dutch woman on an ICE train from Amsterdam to Frankfurt/Main was also targeted during a custom check. The young woman had over 2 kilograms of cocaine in her laptop bag.

The customs representative stated that they regularly intercept drug trafficking on trains and coaches. There has been a significant rise in the number of individual seizures in recent years. A rather distressing episode occurred nearly two years ago when a 39-year-old Nigerian bus passenger had over a kilogram of cocaine in his stomach.

Inquiries are currently being conducted by the customs investigation office in Essen on behalf of the public prosecutors in Cologne and Bonn.
