Culinary union reaches agreement with other Las Vegas hotels ahead of Monday's looming strike
Just hours before the Culinary Union planned a strike on Monday, only three resort casinos were required to sign temporary contracts with hotel workers.
These include the Virgin Hotel Las Vegas, the Grand City Center Hotel and Casino and the Las Vegas Nugget Hotel and Casino.
Performances by Culinary Alliance members and executives in recent days at Fremont Hotel & Casino, Rio Hotel & Casino, Main Street Casino, Brewery & Hotel, Binion Casino & Hotel and Four Queens Resort & Casino Tentative five-year contracts have been reached.
Last week, the union also reached agreements with the Sahara and El Cortez Hotels and Casinos in Las Vegas.
Details of the new temporary contract have not yet been released to the public. Each agreement must be approved by staff before it becomes effective.
Monday strike deadline
Members of the Culinary and Bartenders Unions have warned they may go on strike Monday at 5 a.m. Pacific time at the three restaurants, which do not have temporary contracts.
The possible strike would occur just days before Super Bowl 58, which will be held on Sunday, February 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is expecting a large number of visitors for major games and related events.
Historical Treaty
In recent months, the union has reached agreements with three casino companies: Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International.
According to the contracts signed with the three companies, each employee will receive a 10% salary increase in the first year of the contract. You will receive a 32% salary increase over the life of your contract.
We've been working hard since last year to win a historic contract, but we're not done yet. It’s time for workers to get fair contracts and provide security for themselves and their families,” Culinary Union secretary-treasurer Ted Papach said in a recent statement.
“Other independent [Las Vegas] Strip and downtown workers deserve the same wage increases, benefit protections, safety and technical language, and workforce reductions as the rest of the Strip, and they are already organized and ready to fight for Struggle.", added Papachi.
No one wants to strike, but workers are serious about striking if necessary, and the Culinary Union is with them every step of the way. "
Culinary Workers Union Local 226 has about 60,000 members. This includes bartenders, janitors, cocktail and food servers, cooks, housekeepers, laundry and kitchen workers, and porters.
