Culinary Alliance hosts informational presentation at Sahara Strat Casino

Members of the Las Vegas-based Culinary Alliance will demonstrate Friday night at the Strat and Sahara gaming venues in Las Vegas.

The public address comes as negotiations continue between hotel officials and the management of both casinos.

Attack threats

Union members have threatened to strike at both properties if the two sides fail to agree on a tentative contract by February 2.

They are among some 7,000 hotel workers at 19 casinos/hotels who currently do not have employment contracts.

Union members work on properties on the Las Vegas Strip and in downtown Las Vegas. The union hopes they will be awarded a new five-year contract with a competitive pay increase.

More informational presentations are planned for other Las Vegas hotels in the coming days.

We've been working since last year to win historic contracts with the Mirage, Tropicana, Four Seasons, Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas and Trump Hotel Las Vegas, but we're not done yet ,"Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union, said in a recent statement.

"Companies are making record profits and workers are making record contracts," he added.

Representatives for Strutt and Sahara did not comment on what they might propose at the negotiating table.

In November, members of the Culinary Alliance reached an agreement with the management of three major casino companies: Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment Inc. and MGM Resorts International. The planned strike was averted.

According to the Culinary Alliance, the Wynn, MGM and Caesars agreement resulted in a 10% pay increase for hotel employees in the first year of the agreement. You will receive a cumulative increase of 32% compared to the contract period.

Through these agreements, workers also receive other non-financial benefits, including job security.

Workers elsewhere on the Strip and downtown deserve the same wage increases, benefit protections, safety and technology regulations, and workforce reductions as the rest of the Strip, and they are organized and ready to fight for it, "Papa George said.

He said union leadership and rank-and-file members wanted to avoid a strike. But they will call for a shutdown if necessary.

“With decades of sacrifice and perseverance, we found family-sustaining hospitality jobs in Las Vegas, and we will continue to win what we deserve – a great union job that provides workers with a fair wage , job security and the best health benefits so. “Keep raising a family,” he added.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 represent approximately 60,000 bartenders, bellhops, cocktail servers, cooks, food servers, maids, kitchen workers, laundry staff and porters.
