A staffer from the Düren district who's now under arrest allegedly received a bribe of 300,000 euros in cash from smugglers. This was verified on Tuesday by an official from the Düsseldorf public prosecutor's office, after a piece in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported it. The SPD representative was detained on April 17 as part of a crackdown against a globally active smuggling syndicate spanning eight federal states. The police and prosecution maintained that the criminals primarily targeted wealthy individuals, primarily Chinese nationals.
Perpetrators allegedly generated more than nine million euros
The public prosecutor's office accuses the district staffer of leveraging his connections with the authorities while clerks attempted to decline the Chinese citizens' applications for residency permits in Germany.
The two primary suspects in the case are two 42 and 46-year-old attorneys from the Cologne region. The public prosecutor's office claims that their clients transferred a total of over nine million euros for the smuggling services. The "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" stated that neither the defense lawyers for the two detained attorneys nor those of the Düren district employee responded when asked for a comment.
