A building containing asbestos was set on fire in the Rostock district. - Cops advise public about hazardous smog plume.
A burning building in Kavelstorf, Rostock (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) drew the attention of emergency services at 1 p.m. on a Sunday. About 60 firefighters rushed to the scene. A fire department representative noted, "The roof of the building held asbestos tiles. The resulting fumes were hazardous to health, spreading to Klingendorf, Klein Viegeln, and Kavelstorf villages."
To protect residents, police used both loudspeaker announcements and the MoWaS alert system. They advised shutting doors and staying indoors to minimize exposure.
The fire was brought under control by the firefighters, but the source and extent of the damage are yet to be determined. Although the police haven't confirmed it, they haven't ruled out arson as a cause either. They're asking for any leads by calling 038209-440.
