Construction Manager Joins A's Team for Las Vegas Stadium Project
The Oakland A's revealed that they have appointed Mortenson-McCarthy as their construction manager for their proposed $1.5 billion ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip, as stated in a press release from the Major League Baseball (MLB) squad.
This team-up is a collaboration between Minneapolis-based Mortenson and McCarthy Building Companies, who together constructed the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium for the Las Vegas Raiders, who abandoned Oakland to move to Las Vegas.
A’s president Dave Kaval praised the Raiders’ project in the press release, highlighting its significant accomplishments, such as a 31-month construction period, an exemplary workforce diversity, surpassing local, small, and women and minority-owned business goals, and setting new sports construction standards for Southern Nevada.
Vegas Kingdom
McCarthy has also developed the Palms, Virgin, and Circa casino resorts. Mortenson was responsible for managing the construction of Truist Park for the Atlanta Braves, Target Field for the Minnesota Twins, U.S. Bank Stadium for the Minnesota Vikings, Chase Center for the Golden State Warriors, and the Climate Pledge Arena for the Seattle Kraken.
"The Mortenson-McCarthy joint venture is thrilled to work with the Las Vegas community and create another remarkable project," remarked Ross Edwards, the senior vice president at McCarthy, in the A's announcement.
"It's an incredible opportunity for Mortenson-McCarthy to build the new home for A's baseball in Las Vegas," said Logan Gerken, Mortenson's vice president and general manager, in the A's statement.
Next Steps
However, the A's latest hire needs to be ratified by the Las Vegas Stadium Authority before it becomes official. The board is scheduled to convene again on Thursday, August 24.
Prior to construction commencing, the MLB must approve the A's relocation plan, and the Tropicana casino resort needs to be demolished. If these obstacles are overcome, Las Vegas will be the fourth estate for the Athletics.
They operated in Philadelphia from 1901-54 and Kansas City from 1955-67 prior to settling in Oakland in 1968.
