Over 600 million individuals potentially impacted - Concert giant suffers hacker attack
Live Nation Entertainment revealed a massive data breach to the US securities authority on Friday. The incident was discovered on May 20th, leading them to hire expert companies for a thorough investigation.
The hacker group "ShinyHunters" had already announced an attack on Ticketmaster in the Dark Web, offering customer data from 560 million people for sale. This included names, addresses, and credit card information, with a ransom of $500,000 demanded.
"We are diligently working to lessen the risk for our users and the company," said Live Nation, adding that they've contacted law enforcement and are cooperating with them. The incident, they said, would not significantly affect their entire business or financial situation.
In 2020, "ShinyHunters" gained attention when they leaked customer data from over 60 companies online, according to the US Department of Justice. In January, one group member received a three-year prison sentence and a hefty $5 million compensation payment in Seattle.
Meanwhile, Ticketek, an Australian ticket provider, suffered a cyber attack. However, the company hasn't made any comments regarding the extent of the data leak. The Australian government, however, stated that "a considerable number of Australians" could be affected.
Ticketmaster was acquired by Live Nation in 2010. The company has faced backlash in the US for years due to high service fees and ticket prices.
In the last week, the US Department of Justice filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Ticketmaster and Live Nation. The allegations state that they're exploiting their dominant market position to inflate concert prices and drive competitors out of the market.
