Streaming Service Giant Netflix Makes Headlines Yet Again for Boosting Original Content - Con artists utilize this novel deception.

A while back, Netflix raised its subscription costs in Germany. Consequently, several customers might be mulling over whether they should switch to a more affordable package or put their membership on hold. Fraudsters seem to be trying to take advantage of this. The consumer advice center is issuing a warning about a new scam that's allegedly on the rise since mid-May.

Think Twice Before 'Renewing'!

On May 14, the consumer advice center received a large number of phishing emails sent to Netflix users. The subject lines of these bogus emails were "Please confirm your payment information / please check" or "Your membership has expired!".

In these deceptive messages, subscribers are informed that their Netflix subscription has supposedly expired and that they must update their payment method "to keep enjoying Netflix content". At the same time, a discount is offered: The first three months after the update are claimed to be free.

To avail of this supposed discount and retain access to the service, recipients are told to click on a button labeled "Renew". However, the consumer advice center strongly advises against clicking on this button. They suggest moving the email to the trash folder without responding.

The wording utilized in these scam emails appears to have been directly translated from another language. One glaring example is the use of "Expecting" instead of the more common "Pending" under the "Payment" section. Also, the sender's email address suggests foul play.

Another Scam Circulating

The tech portal "Chip.de" disclosed a similar email received by an employee, with the subject "Action required - update your payment details to avoid interruptions". The message claimed there was a payment-related issue and that customers should update their payment details accordingly. This email provided a link labeled "Update now", which would supposedly allow users to modify their payment details. However, caution is called for as fraudsters aim to obtain users' personal data through this trick.

This email appears to be legitimate, but the sender's address is a clue that it's not an official email from Netflix. The portal cautions users to move such emails or similar messages to the spam folder without replying.

Netflix Issues a Warning

In its help center, the streaming service underscores that emails or text messages requesting a phone number, email address, payment method, or account password, among other things, "likely aren't from Netflix". Users will never be asked to send personal data via email or text message by Netflix. They urge against clicking on links found in such messages and divulging personal information.

Netflix's Price Increases

A few weeks ago, Netflix hiked the prices for its subscription model. There are now 3 options for new and returning customers: a commercial-sponsored standard subscription costs 4.99 euros per month, the standard subscription without ads amounts to 13.99 euros per month, and the premium model equates to 19.99 euros per month. For those who wish to book additional membership seats - so that friends or family members at another location can watch - they'll have to pay an additional 4.99 euros per month for each seat.

The basic subscription is no longer available to new or returning customers. Netflix had declared in their quarterly report in January that it would scrap this option in certain countries where the advertising option is bookable.
