"He encounters difficulties in that area" - Cologne's new goal scorer faces eleven-game suspension.
In an incredible comeback against Union Berlin (3:2), exciting youngster Damion Downs (19) scored the winning goal in the 93rd minute and led FC to safety, saving them from relegation. This victory also meant Cologne had the chance for a last-minute savior game against Heidenheim on Saturday (3.30 pm).
However, it seems likely that Downs won't get a chance to start.
Downs: a perfect wildcard for Schultz
Confusing strategy from Cologne. Coach Timo Schultz (46) deliberately left the much-loved fan favorite off the starting list against Union and instead opted for the struggling Sargis Adamyan (30). This move didn't work, as you might expect.
Schultz explained, "We decided against Damion in the starting line-up because we knew Union would likely employ three physically strong central defenders. He's still not 100% comfortable with that."
As a result, Downs only entered the game in the 74th minute and, according to Schultz, had a significant impact on the match. "When the game becomes a bit disjointed and players are starting to tire, that's when Damion can truly excel."
Downs had already snatched a crucial point for FC in the 3-3 draw against Gladbach in early March. But things took a turn for the worse for the forward, who didn't even make the squad against Bochum. He also missed the games against Darmstadt and Freiburg. Given Cologne's persisting offensive woes, this is puzzling.
Schultz, however, remains committed to his plan. "He needs to keep improving to become a regular starter. Damion is always getting minutes on the field, but there's still much improvement needed."
Shultz applauds Downs' skills
While it appears Downs will once again be benched, the fans have been clamoring for him to start. However, Cologne's coach is fully confident in his striker's abilities.
Schultz: "Damion is a supremely gifted player. He has made great strides in the last two or three months. He's got a remarkable finishing ability, constantly seeks out goalscoring opportunities, and is strong with both feet."
All the talents that other FC strikers can't claim for themselves. Schultz should perhaps reconsider his decision to hold off Downs before the Heidenheim final.
