Codere launches new poker program in Mexico
Spanish gambling operator Codere has opened its first dedicated poker room in the country, with plans to launch more.
Codere opened its first poker room last week at the Codere Meneo Casino in the country’s capital, Mexico City. The creation of the Codere poker series brand was also announced.
The new Codere Meneo poker room features 10 professional gaming tables, including one for live streaming and a private gaming room. Cash games include options such as No Limit Texas Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha. There are also multiple betting levels ranging from MXN 5/$10 to MXN 25/$50 ($0.29/$0.57 to $1.43/$2.86), as well as special higher stakes games.
Rooms open at 4 p.m. and closes at 1:30 a.m. weekdays. Opening hours are extended by one hour on Fridays and Saturdays.
The aim is to offer cash games at festivals and tournaments.Codere is well positioned in the industry with operations in 25 states in Mexico and more than 85 casinos.
Speaking to Spanish-language poker news site Codigo Poker, Marcelo Silva, regional director of live gaming for Latin America at Codere, said more poker rooms are already in the works.
In addition to Mexico, Codere has experimented with poker tournaments in Latin America in the past and is currently active in six other countries. Ultimately, if all goes well, all hotels may have their own poker rooms, although Codere wouldn't confirm this.
Codere continues to evolve
Codere has undergone several major changes in recent years. Of particular note are the takeovers by creditors and shareholders and the spin-off of the online gaming unit Codere Online. It has come a long way since then and is starting to find a solid foundation.
A week ago, Codere reported second-quarter operating income of 335 million euros ($359.35 million), a year-on-year increase of 5%. This is despite some challenges facing the Latin American market. Most notably, several gambling venues in Argentina and Mexico were shut down due to controversial "violations." Several have since reopened.
Affected by this, sales in the Mexican market fell by 3.1% compared with the first quarter. But compared with the previous year, the value was still more than 14%. Argentina was down 12% compared to Q2 2022 results.
