Making it to the playoffs - Coaching icon returns to Alba.
Not just a fleeting drop-by! Aito shares, "I'm here until May 26. Later on, I'll head to Mexico and Barcelona for a training course."
Timely return: Aito's back with Alba!
However, his role won't be running the drills or standing on the sidelines during games. Aito clarifies, "I wanted to meet the new talents personally. I keep in touch with Israel and chat regularly. But it's different when you see them on TV or during practice."
But, what's the real deal with the Spaniard who bagged the championship with Alba in 2020 and 2021? Is he practically coaching for Gonzalez in secret?
"No," assures sports director Himar Ojeda firmly. "Aito is a hugely esteemed figure. With his wisdom and experience, he shouldn't be lounging on the couch. So, I'm requesting him to remain with us. Plus, as a guide and mentor for our fledgling coaches, our women's coaches. He maintains a great bond with Israel, and they've been in touch since time immemorial."
Aito hasn't responded. Hence, Ojeda is cautious about it. "We're still attempting to persuade him," reveals Ojeda. "Since he's here now and will stay a while, we're hoping he'll pack his bags for good."
Alba coach Israel Gonzalez: "I think it's fantastic that Aito's here"
For Israel Gonzalez, having his previous supervisor back graces him: "I think it's fantastic that he's here," states Gonzalez about his compatriot. "It's beneficial to have his vast experience and insights. He speaks with each player, and they listen intently to him. He supplements the team splendidly. I'm delighted about that."
Aito hasn't inked his contract. So, Ojeda's collective calm: "It's not confirmed just yet. But hopefully, we'll release an official statement soon."
Gonzalez worked underneath Aito for six years. Two years in Spain, four at Alba. "We usually see eye to eye," shares the Alba coach. "Same like the old times."
However, fans won't spot Aito on the sidelines in this year's playoffs. "He won't be next to me wearing zoot suits," says Gonzalez. And adds, "Not this time of the year."
In the interim, Aito will only observe training, chat with players and coaches, and convey his thoughts. As if he'd never left.
