Two closing times and a revival - Cinema Highlights for May

In May, we witness the end of civilization twice. First, in the fourth instalment of the "Planet of the Apes" remake, we see primates taking over as the ruling species, leaving humans in the shadows. Then, in "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," George Miller once again unleashes chaos in a post-apocalyptic world. For those seeking a story with more heart than destruction, "What Happens Later" features Meg Ryan's comeback to the big screen after nearly a decade with her first film since "Ithaca" in 2015.

"Planet of the Apes 4: New Kingdom," May 8

Years have passed since Caesar ruled. Apes now dominate the world, leading peaceful lives while humans exist as mere shadows. A newly crowned tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, and a young ape goes on a journey that challenges his understanding of the past and makes choices that affect both ape and human futures.

Opinion:

The sci-fi classic, initially starring Charlton Heston, was rebooted in 2011 with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and has reached its fourth chapter. By explaining how apes came to rule over humans, these films successfully preserved the original world order presented in the 1968 film. In "Planet of the Apes 4: New Kingdom," this status quo is finally achieved, making it the first film where humans are no longer the ruling race on earth. However, is this narrative too similar to the original?

"What Happens Later," May 16

Questioning their personal choices, Willa (Meg Ryan) and Bill (David Duchovny) meet at an airport. While waiting, their innocuous banter develops into an evening filled with accusations, confessions, and the realization that the passion that once connected them still exists. As the walls surrounding their relationship crumble, it seems like the stars and even the PA system are working together to reunite them.

Opinion:

Once a supreme force in Hollywood, Meg Ryan has barely appeared on screen for 15 years. After directing "Ithaca" in 2015, she takes on leading roles as actress, director, and co-writer in "What Happens Later." Joined by fellow actor David Duchovny, the film might mark a fresh start for both. Drawing from her past romantic comedy successes like "Harry and Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle," Ryan delivers a heartfelt tale of two struggling individuals.

"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," May 23

Abandoned in the wasteland by her community, young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) is captured by bikers led by warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). On their journey, they encounter the Citadel, where Immortan Joe rules. As these two tyrants clash for dominance, Furiosa must survive and gather resources to return home.

Rating:

Winner of six Oscars in 2016, "Mad Max: Fury Road" was a critical and commercial success. Charlize Theron's portrayal of Furiosa led to a spin-off, with "The Queen's Gambit" star Anya Taylor-Joy taking on the role. Timelessly villainous, Chris Hemsworth adds a chilling presence as the antagonist Dementus. Although a prequel, this story still promises a thrilling action-packed adventure.
