Cincinnati Bengals without quarterback Joe Burrow due to injury
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will miss the remainder of the regular season with a right wrist injury. The Bengals' Super Bowl odds on DraftKings have dropped from +1,400 on Monday to +10,000 on Friday.
Burrow left "Thursday Night Football" in the second quarter with an apparent injury to his throwing hand. With Burrow out for the second half, backup quarterback Jake Browning finished the game. The Bengals lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34-20.
Burrow underwent an MRI on Friday, which revealed torn ligaments in his right wrist. The Bengals announced Burrow is officially out for the remainder of the season.
If the Bengals make the playoffs, there's no indication if he could return to the team in the playoffs.
The Tigers dropped to 5-5 on the season and currently sit at the bottom of the AFC North. With a win on Thursday, the top-ranked Ravens improved their record to 8-3, becoming the first team in the AFC Champions League to win eight games.
Futures market collapses after Burrow injury
The Bengals' chances to win Super Bowl 58 were +1100 in the preseason. Their odds dropped to +3000 after a 1-3 start.
In the midst of a four-game winning streak, the Bengals' Super Bowl odds rose to +1,200 last week. After Sunday's loss to the Texans, their odds dropped to +1,400.
Oddsmakers were quick to react to news of Burrow’s injury. They overhauled the Bengals' future. The Bengals now have a +10,000 chance to win the Super Bowl and a +5,000 chance to win the AFC Championship.
The Ravens are the favorite to win the AFC North at -300, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers (+380) and the Cleveland Browns (+475). At +4,500 odds, the Bengals are now nowhere near winning the division title.
The Browns also lost their starting quarterback this week, announcing that Deshaun Watson fractured his throwing shoulder and underwent season-ending surgery.
Tigers start season with Banged-Up Burrow
Ever since Burrow led the Cincinnati Bengals to the AFC Championship two seasons ago, the Bengals have been surrounded by high expectations and championship aspirations. The Bengals made it to Super Bowl LVI but lost to the Los Angeles Rams in an exciting season that energized the city of Cincinnati and the Bengals fan base.
The Tigers had a 12-4 record last season and have made it to the AFC Championship Game in consecutive seasons. The Kansas City Chiefs fell short of back-to-back Super Bowl berths when they won the AFC Championship with a home disadvantage.
Burrow was injured at the start of training camp in late July. The non-contact injury occurred during a passing drill and Burrow needed assistance off the practice field.
Burrow missed the remainder of the preseason but started in Week 1. Without any preseason action, Burrow looked sluggish and rusty in the first game of the season. His calf injury has not yet fully recovered, and it has been completely drained by pain.
The Tigers lost their first two games of the season to conference opponents. Burrow aggravated a calf injury in Week 2's three-point loss to the Ravens. It's doubtful he'll play in Week 3's "Monday Night Football" game against the Rams. Even though it was a game-time decision, Burrow suited up and led the Bengals to a three-run victory, their first of the season.
The Bengals have won four games to improve to 5-3 after losing to the Tennessee Titans in Week 4. Burrow is finally back to his old self, especially after his Week 7 bye.
Was Burrow injured for the first time last Sunday?
In Week 10, the Bengals lost to the Houston Texans 30-27. Burrow injured his right wrist against the Texans but never left the game.
Before "Thursday Night Football," Burrow was photographed leaving the team bus with his right wrist in a cast. The Bengals reported no issues on their official injury report for Week 11, and the NFL is investigating whether the Bengals withheld critical information about Burrow.
With less than six minutes left in the second quarter against the Ravens, Burrow completed a touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon. The Bengals cut the Ravens' lead to four points and trailed 14-10. Cameras captured Burrow visibly in pain as he left the field after his touchdown pass. He tried to throw the ball to the sideline but failed. Burrow ended the night, and head coach Zac Taylor used Browning the rest of the way.
Browning completed 8 of 14 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown to wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. He also added 40 yards on four carries.
Taylor told reporters Burrow sprained his right wrist when he fell early in the game but did not specify when.
Browning will start the rest of the season. He went undrafted in Washington and spent 2019 and 2020 as a member of the Minnesota Vikings' 2020 practice squad.
The Bengals signed Browning to the practice squad before the start of the 2021 season but did not make a move until this season. Browning won the backup job behind Burrow in the preseason.
