Chinese buys 50,000 lottery tickets with the same number and wins $30 million
Mathematics shows that buying multiple tickets does not increase your chances of winning. This may be true, but a Chinese lottery player ignored the odds and bought 50,000 tickets with the same number and won a lot of money.
A resident of Nanchang, east China's Jiangxi province, won a 220 million yuan ($30 million) prize. The unidentified lucky man reportedly invested 100,000 yuan ($13,970) in a Happy 8 lottery ticket to get his windfall.
All tickets have the same number. That's why every ticket becomes a winner when entered into the Lottery Draw.
Lucky Rabbit
Among the Chinese zodiac animals, 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. It amounts to a year of "hope and prosperity," certainly for lottery winners.
The winning streak began on December 2, when the man purchased tickets for the Happy 8 Choose 7 lottery game. He visited various operators in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, grabbed lottery tickets and played the same numbers at all operators.
The gamble paid off when he bought a ticket on the day of the draw. Each of the 50,000 tickets netted a single prize of 4,475 yuan (approximately $625), culminating in a huge jackpot.
It didn’t take long for him to receive the life-changing money. A few days later, he went to the local lottery headquarters in Jiangxi to collect his winnings.
There he revealed that he had been buying lottery tickets regularly for five years. The veteran player revealed that he buys tickets three to four times a week, spending thousands to tens of thousands of yuan on each transaction. He may have spent more than $1 million on tickets over five years, but the windfall put him way ahead in terms of return on investment.
Big solution?
Rumors about the big win erupted on Chinese social media, leading some to speculate that it was the result of a major fix. To them, it's the most logical explanation for how someone could spend so much money on the same numbers and then win.
In the Happy 8 lottery, as with Powerball and other lotteries, the number of winning numbers on the ticket determines the amount of the prize. Since he scored all seven points while playing 40, 41, 42, 44, 63, 64 and 65, the unknown person took the jackpot and multiplied it by the number of tickets he purchased.
People on Chinese social media channels were very skeptical of the results. They questioned the legality of the draw and whether the man had inside information.
They also wonder whether this is a ploy by the Chinese government to boost interest in the lottery, which funds civic projects. The China Welfare Lottery, which manages the various lotteries, makes no mention of the huge jackpots on its website, which seems to contradict this theory.
Maybe the doubters are just frustrated that they didn't win or that the winner didn't have to pay income taxes on winning. As we all know, the latest win is a testament to the unpredictability of the lottery game and, for some, the opportunities that come with pursuing luck through it.
