Beijing initiated a vast military drill near Taiwan's shores on Thursday. China's authorities aim to deter the incoming Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen from pursuing official independence for Taiwan from China

For China, Taiwan is considered a Chinese territory, even with the existence of sovereign and democratically elected governments there for years. Multiple times, Beijing has threatened to use force to bring Taiwan, with a populace exceeding 23 million, and the mainland together.

As stated by the Chinese military, this activity serves to enhance their offshore and aerial combat readiness, as well as target specific areas. The navy and air force will approach Taiwan from the north, south and east, conducting "patrols" and also drawing near to certain islands - like Kinmen - which lays just several kilometers away from the Chinese mainland. The Taiwan Strait spans roughly 130 kilometers at its narrowest.
