Check yourself: Las Vegas airport is testing TSA self-service screening
As the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) works to return air travel to pre-pandemic levels, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is rolling out self-service screening options.
The Rapid Screening program, developed by the Science and Technology Agency (S&T), will make its national debut in January at Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas.
The airport security experience we all know may soon look and feel a lot different for passengers and airlines alike—and in a good way,” TSA Innovation Task Force analysis Department Manager Christina Peach promised in a statement. A press release from the Department of Homeland Security.
Of course, only customers of the TSA Trusted Traveler program, which includes TSA PreCheck, will try it first.
Practice self-control
The new technology will allow Trusted Traveler passengers to move through TSA inspections "at their own pace" while minimizing face-to-face contact between officers and passengers, the release said.
Similar to the existing TSA process, passengers place their luggage on a conveyor belt. However, they are supported by a video monitor that provides them with detailed instructions, as well as a help button that connects to a live security agent.
Passengers then pass through a controlled door with automatic entry and exit doors that only open after the passenger has passed the security check process.
In a press release from the Department of Homeland Security, program manager John Fortune said it would be "like self-order kiosks at fast-food restaurants and dine-in restaurants."
In 2021, S&T awarded 4 contracts to 3 companies. According to a press release, Las Vegas visitors will be test subjects for the PAX MX2 prototype, which will be built by Vanderlande Industries Inc. in Marietta, Georgia.
While the press release claims the technology is intended to "reduce the number of pat-downs and bag checks TSA officers must perform," automation also has the potential to lead to a reduction in TSA staffing, leaving each remaining officer to perform the same or more tasks. .
