Passers-by spot something. - Caution: Potentially lethal serpent spotted in Schleswig-Holstein!

Attention, all those in the Oeversee (Schleswig-Holstein)! Be extra cautious if you're out and about because a poisonous snake is believed to be on the loose.

Last week, passers-by spotted and even managed to capture a picture of this dangerous reptile in a dog exercise area on Juhlschauer Straße. Ecologists from the State Office for the Environment have identified it as possibly being an African tree snake.

Understanding the Dangers of the African Tree Snake

These light green snakes can grow up to 2 meters long. They're incredibly shy and elusive, but their bite can be deadly. If confronted or feeling threatened, the snake will puff itself up and make quick, lateral or forward movements, often striking with its teeth. Its bite can cause major damage.

African tree snakes' venom alters blood clotting and can destroy blood vessels after 24 to 48 hours. The victims start bleeding from the bite site, as well as from their mouth's mucous membranes. Internal bleeding and damaged kidneys may also occur. A large dose of venom can lead to fatal consequences for humans without specific antiserum treatment.

Looking Out for the Snake and Its Safety

Staff from the State Office for the Environment are monitoring the area closely and conducting a full investigation to determine if it could be a less dangerous species.

The police are urging people to steer clear of the greenery and stay away from tall grass. Owners should also keep their dogs on a leash in this area. In case you spot the snake, avoid any physical contact and call emergency services immediately. It's not yet clear how the creature might have ended up in the free-range area or if it was from a snake breeder. These snakes are typically found south of the Sahara and down to South Africa's southernmost regions. The search for answers is still ongoing.
