Casino Visitor in Detroit's Greektown Discovers Roaches in Drinking Cup

A customer at Hollywood Casino in Greektown, Detroit spotted roaches in a soda cup after drinking a Pepsi last week as per a recent report.

Jarome Quinney, the individual in question, said there were numerous roaches in the cup, a local news channel WJBK reported on Tuesday.

Quinney didn't have any problems when he first dispensed Pepsi from the soda fountain at the casino, but issues arose when he went back for a refill.

"I grabbed my old top and then grabbed a new cup, and as soon as I grabbed a new cup, a bunch of roaches emerged from the cup," Quinney told the news channel. "I went to the bathroom and vomited. I don't know if a roach came out or not."

When he came back to the fountain area, he saw three or four visitors drinking from their cups.

"I was like, whoa," Quinney said. "That means anyone who was playing or gambling and came for a drink definitely got contaminated."

He then informed the casino staff about the issue, but felt like he wasn't taken seriously.

Casino Reacts

"To ensure the safety of our guests, we...retained the services of Ecolab who inspected the area and confirmed the absence of any additional evidence or infestation concerns," the casino stated in a response to WJBK.

The casino underwent rigorous cleaning in the fountain area and other self-service soda stations, Jeff Morris, the casino's vice president of public affairs and government relations, told WJBK.

WJBK also reached out to the Detroit Health Department, and their staff were scheduled to look into the situation.

As per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roaches can transmit harmful bacteria, parasites, and pathogens, such as salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, and hepatitis A. The presence of roaches has also been associated with asthma in children.
