Casino Employees in Detroit to Decide on Strike Action When Contracts End

Employees at three casinos in Detroit are deciding if they should authorize strikes once their contracts come to an end next month. The voting will finish by 9 pm, and the results will be announced Friday night.

The workers at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino Hotel, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown - who also handle dining areas, watering holes, shops, and lodging facilities - have been negotiating with their bosses for a while. They request for better wages due to the escalated living costs.

The laborers at these gambling establishments are affiliated with the Detroit Casino Council (DCC). The DCC refers to their previous conveniences during the casino industry's crisis.

"After COVID closures, Detroit casino employees sacrificed raises and took on higher workloads to help the industry recover," declared the DCC in a recent statement. "Currently, workers are having difficulty making ends meet, despite the gaming industry generating unprecedented gaming revenues from both on-site and online gaming."

If a settlement hasn't been agreed on soon, the DCC may give the go-ahead for a strike, beginning as early as mid-October, when the existing contracts lapse.

The Detroit Casino Council is composed of five unions that look after the staff at the three casinos: Unite Here Local 24, the UAW, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters.

The Las Vegas Vote

This action in Detroit comes a few days after members of the Culinary and Bartenders Union in Las Vegas authorized a strike at the city's gaming facilities.

This union represents employees in hotels, restaurants, and other non-gaming sectors at major resorts throughout the Las Vegas Strip. Their contracts with MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn/Encore Resorts, which were initially set to expire in June, have been pushed till September.

Members of the Culinary Union recently voted in favor of a walkout at Las Vegas-based workplaces if negotiations cease to produce a new contract.

"Workers helped take these companies through the pandemic and into a spectacular revival," shared Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer for the Culinary Union, in a statement. "Workers should not be overlooked."

"Companies are thriving, and we are demanding that workers don't fall behind."

The UAW Strike

The decision by Detroit casino workers to vote on a possible strike coincides with approximately 25,000 members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) being on strike at plants in Michigan and elsewhere.

This number amounts to around 17% of the union's 146,000 members. [^back^]
