Casino Crime Update: $28,000 Taken from School, Reportedly Used at Florida Gaming Venue

A former faculty member in Florida got arrested for allegedly stealing $245,000 from her job. She spent $28,000 of the stolen money at Coconut Creek Seminole Casino, police said.

Jennifer Tirado, 43, who was in charge of finances at North Miami Beach's Scheck Hillel Community School, was charged with organized fraud and first-degree grand theft, as reported by Florida's WTVJ.

She was taken into custody on Tuesday and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The next day, she appeared in court. Her bail was set at $50,000, and a judge told her to stay away from the school.

Suspected Fraud

From February 2020, the ex-administrator made 33 fraudulent transactions with the school funds. The total value was $245,465.28, the authorities revealed.

In just about three weeks, she transferred over $53,000, the police disclosed further.

There were 28 electronic payments deposited in her personal accounts and five in the accounts of a company.

Majority of the money deposited in the business accounts later went into her own accounts, as per the warrant.

Employees who worked with Tirado raised doubts when they noticed school money had been transferred into the wrong accounts. She was "extremely dismissive" of their concerns, they said. "She claimed she would fix the errors and there was nothing to be concerned about", the warrant detailed.

The issues were brought to light but didn't get their due attention promptly. So the employees informed another worker. They then told the police about the suspicious activities.

The cops began investigating and Tirado was fired in November 2021.

The Jewish school has sorted things out.

"We've been fully covered by our insurance company and are financially secure," Rabbi Ari Leubitz of the school shared with WTVJ. "We've put into place measures to further enhance our financial controls to prevent something like this from happening in the future."
