Casino crime summary: Three children left unattended in car at Canadian casino

Three children were left alone in a car at Canada's Pickering Casino Resort for about four hours Monday night.

At some point, the children decided to leave the parking lot where the vehicle was parked. They were spotted gambling on a street near a gambling establishment in Pickering, Ont.

When the security guard approached the children, one of them told them that their mother had gone to the casino.

One of the women handed the children a mobile phone, but local police checked the phone and found it was out of battery.

The children are 10, 9 and 2 years old. Police did not release any names.

The two-year-old child belonged to one of the women and the older child belonged to another woman, Toronto City News reported.

Police arrived at the casino after receiving a call about an unsupervised child.

Police investigated and reviewed surveillance video from the casino, which showed the children were left alone for more than four hours.

Both mothers were arrested by Durham Regional Police. Each is accused of leaving a child unsupervised.

A 39-year-old woman was a resident of Aurora, Ont., and the parent of two older children. The other is a 41-year-old woman and mother from Markham, Ont. Police did not release the names of the two women.

The Children's Aid Society was informed of the incident. None of the children appeared to be injured.

Similar incidents have occurred in the United States. In these incidents, parents were arrested for leaving their children unsupervised while adults went to play at playgrounds.

Joliet Casino Tourist Arrested

Last week, a woman was arrested for allegedly carrying a gun into Harrah's Joliet Casino in Illinois.

Over the weekend, Elizabeth Brothers, 61, of Boaz, Alabama, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of ammunition, Patch reported.

She was released on a promise to appear in court.

Last Thursday, Joliet police were alerted that casino security found a woman, later identified as the brother, with a gun. The brothers entered the gaming area and tried to break into the arcade. She was stopped at the entrance after the metal detector went off.

Police told Patch that the brother had a firearms license valid in Alabama, but that the firearms license was not available to Illinois gun owners.
