Casino crime roundup: New Hampshire man charged with robbery
A 26-year-old man was arrested this week for allegedly robbing a woman in the parking lot of the Filotimo Casino & DraftKings Sports Book in New Hampshire.
Estevan Perez Ortiz of Manchester, New Hampshire, was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon in connection with the Dec. 15 robbery.
Perez Ortiz allegedly stole the victim's wallet while armed with a gun while the victim was on the grounds of the Manchester venue. There is no information on how much money was in the wallet at the time.
Perez-Ortiz reportedly fled the scene in a silver Honda Odyssey minivan. According to Patch, police searched for him near the casino without success and even used a special dog. But he soon escaped.
Perez-Ortiz, who police eventually identified through surveillance video, was arrested Wednesday and appeared in Hillsborough North Superior Court on Thursday.
Three people arrested for forging signatures
Three suspects were recently arrested for submitting forged signatures on a referendum proposal in Florida. A petition calls for the expansion of gambling in the state.
David Lennard Simmons, 49, of Clewiston, Florida, was charged earlier this month with 17 counts of fraudulent use of a deceased person's personally identifiable information.
The petition he circulated would allow cardrooms to offer games like blackjack. According to the Tallahassee Democrat, the petition has been withdrawn.
Also the subject of the petition: Zachary Paul Dworsky, 34, of Miami, was indicted this month on 15 felony counts of unlawful use of personally identifiable information and using another person's name or Sign the petition with a fictitious name.
In November, Natalie Marie Marrero, 33, of Orlando, was arrested on similar charges. She faces 16 counts each of fraudulent use of personally identifiable information and false sworn voter registration information.
Their petition calls for the legalization of recreational marijuana. The issue has received so many petition signatures that it may be included in next November's referendum.
Each suspect is a paid signature collector.
"Fraudulently exploiting this process for personal gain is not only illegal but violates the trust of law-abiding Floridians across the state," Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd said in a statement announcing the arrests.
196 illegal gambling machines confiscated
Florida authorities raided two illegal gambling establishments on Wednesday, seizing 196 gambling machines and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Unnamed gaming venues in Charlotte County are closed. The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office does not yet know if anyone will be charged.
The Sheriff's Office sent two warning letters to the businesses before the raids. The operators have decided to ignore them, Florida television station WFTX reported.
