Casino Berlin donates 13,500 euros to 14 sports clubs.
Spielbank Berlin has announced that it will be donating a total of 13,500 euros to 14 sports clubs in Reinickendorf. Frank Steffel, a CDU politician and active member of the casino's advisory board, spearheaded the charitable campaign. The prominent Berlin institution is known for its generous sponsorship in recent months. Here's a rundown of the latest developments.
Emphasis on crucial social institutions
Spielbank Berlin is providing financial support to 14 sports clubs with a 13,500 euro donation from its own "sponsorship fund." The recipients include VfB Hermsdorf e. V., Nord-Berliner Schützen-Gemeinschaft 1975, and Saunafreunde Berlin Familiensportverein e. V., each receiving a 1,000 euro donation check. Reinickendorf has approximately 264,000 residents and is represented politically by none other than Frank Steffel (CDU), who, as a member of the casino's advisory board, played a key role in the sponsorship campaign. Steffel reveals his reasons for the initiative:
"Each of the chosen clubs, despite their differences, shares a common trait: they all play a significant social role in Reinickendorf. I've spent my entire life in this district; I grew up here, so I know how essential clubs are for our community. I'm thrilled to be able to offer these institutions in my home district a modest donation in this way."
Long-standing clubs with rich history
As Steffel continued to explain, VfB Hermsdorf, founded in 1899, is one of the oldest sports clubs in Berlin and boasts about 3,500 members, making it one of the capital's largest traditional clubs. The club offers both competitive and recreational sports, as well as health activities. VfB Hermsdorf is committed to fostering physical activity and improving people's well-being, which Steffel believes contributes to social connection.
Saunafreunde Berlin, with a history spanning over 60 years, is synonymous with family and sports for all ages in Berlin Reinickendorf. The association also prioritizes nature conservation and promoting a tolerant naturist culture. In addition to sauna activities, the club offers a wide variety of sports and coaching for children and young adults. The club currently has 800 members, with 200 of those being kids. The 1,000 euro donation will be allocated towards refurbishing a beach volleyball court.
Nord-Berliner Schützengemeinschaft, with over 40 years of history, is yet another traditional Reinickendorf club with 235 members of varying ages. The community is devoted to preserving the Berlin shooting tradition and will use the donated money to repair the club's shooting facilities.
Stimulating sports in Berlin
It's no secret that Spielbank Berlin has been promoting sport and cultural initiatives in Berlin for decades. Their advisory boards have a "grant pot" at their disposal, which has regularly been used to support various charitable and social projects. In light of this recent donation campaign, Gerhard Wilhelm, Managing Director of Spielbank Berlin (founded in 1975), also commented on the significance of these efforts. The statement read:
"Promoting sport in the capital is a significant priority for Spielbank Berlin since its inception. Our city has a remarkable club culture, a source of benefits for many. We are thrilled that Frank Steffel, our advisory board chairman, has chosen Reinickendorf's leading clubs, as they each significantly contribute to sports and club life in northwest Berlin."
A series of recent donations
To highlight Spielbank Berlin's ongoing commitment to aiding sports and cultural endeavors, several initiatives and projects have been supported in recent months. In January, for example, Spielbank Berlin launched an initiative worth a total of 25,000 euros to preserve several local sports clubs, including TSV Wittenau and TSV Spandau.
In early June, the paralympic world champion and visually impaired swimming record-breaker Elena Krawzow was presented with a 3,000 euro check. The event was attended by prominent figures, including the former mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit (SPD), who is also a member of Spielbank Berlin's advisory board.
To combat homophobic violence, the homosexual anti-violence initiative MANEO received a 5,000 euro grant in May. The cheque was handed over by Klaus Wowereit. It will be fascinating to see which projects Spielbank Berlin will support down the line.
