Carrot Top extends stay in Las Vegas until age 65
Carrot Top has been a major attraction at the Luxor Hotel since 2005 and will officially become a major attraction at MGM Resorts until 2030. Scott Thompson (his real name) recently extended his stay at the Luxor Atrium until he becomes eligible for Social Security benefits, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
George Kliavkoff, president of entertainment and sports at MGM Resorts, said in a 2019 press release: “Carrot Top has been bringing entertainment to the masses in the Luxor since 2005, and we are excited that the Luxor will be there for many years to come. It became its home here." Thompson extended his current contract through 2025.
Visitors from around the world come to Las Vegas to vent, escape and laugh. Carrot Top’s show does it all. "
Although Thompson was the butt of jokes from other comedians over the decades for his unusual appearance and use of props on stage, those jokes were only a small part of Carrot Top's actual performance. It's more self-deprecating, unconventional and melancholy than the 58-year-old lookalike most people associate with the Wendy's logo (his joke, not ours).
Who will lead Carrot?
After the new contract ends, Thompson will be 65 years old and has a stable record in Vegas for 34 years. Since 1996, he moved to Luxor after starring in the Hollywood Theater at the MGM Grand.
That would put Thompson behind magician David Copperfield, who headlined Caesars Palace for 15 years before spending another 23 at the MGM Grand, for a total of 38 years of almost no success. The enemy can be defeated.
When Copperfield moved to the MGM Grand in 2000, he effectively replaced Thompson. Or, as Thompson liked to joke: "David Copperfield made me disappear."
Whether Thompson ranks second or third among the current headliners in terms of longevity depends on how long Payne and Teller can stick around. The comic book wizards started out in Bally's (now Horseshoe) in 1993 and then opened a store in Rio in 2001, staying in business for a total of 30 years and counting. In July, they extended the contract until 2026.
"I didn't feel any different," Thompson told R-J. "I feel young. I still feel energetic. I mean, one night I'm sure I'm going to be like, 'Uh-oh, I'm not moving very well...'"
