Carnival Cruise Lines Increases Smoke-Free Casino Spaces
The Carnival Cruise Company is extending the number of smoke-free gaming spots available on their ships.
A spokesperson for the Florida-based Carnival Corporation-owned cruise line revealed this week on social media, stating that they now operate 10 vessels with non-smoking casino areas. John Heald, affectionately known as the Carnival Cruise Line's brand ambassador, shared the news, confirming that their latest additions to the fleet - the Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Celebration, and Mardi Gras - all have gaming rooms without smoking. These new offerings complement the six existing ships in the company's lineup, each having smoke-free casinos distinct from their primary onboard casinos where tobacco use remains permissible: Carnival Firenze, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista, Carnival Dream, Carnival Magic, and Carnival Breeze.
The preference for smoke-free casinos is growing in popularity amongst travelers sailing on large cruise ships.
Parallel to Carnival announcing their activities, Royal Caribbean last year repurposed some of their jazz clubs into smoke-friendly gaming spaces. Royal Caribbean, the world's second-largest cruise operator, turned their "Jazz on 4" lounges on all their Oasis-class ships into non-smoking casinos.
Cruise Ship Smoking Policies
In Heald's announcement, he emphasized that while smoking is prohibited throughout most areas of Carnival cruises, there are designated areas onboard where it is allowed. Cigarettes are forbidden inside all staterooms and on their balconies.
To promote passenger security, major cruise lines establish designated outdoor locations with controlled smoking zones. Cruise ships strive to minimize fire hazards to assure the safety of all passengers.
Addressing a question on smoking regulations on board, Heald said on social media that passengers could face an instant $500 fine if caught smoking. He cautioned, "If after that your smoking continues, then we may disembark you and you may not be allowed to sail again with Carnival."
There is an anonymous tip line available to guests to report any smoking infractions, and this policy also applies to electronic cigarettes (vapes). Cruising on a US-registered ship is against the law if you are carrying cannabis, as it is illegal on a federal level.
Although these ships can register in the Caribbean and overseas, statistics on accidents involving fire are poorly recorded due to their international status. Andrew Winston, a South Florida attorney specializing in cruise ship accidents from Winston Law, highlighted that, "Based on the number of cruise ships and passengers who choose to travel on these vessels every year, fire-related accidents affect a very small proportion of crew members and passengers."
Casino Smoking - Gamblers Only
Carnival's website confirms that their primary casinos are the only places on board where smoking is allowed. However, only those seated at a slot machine or table and currently gambling are authorized to light up a cigarette. Smoking at the casino's bar or while standing is strictly forbidden. Cigars and tobacco pipes are also restricted to the designated outdoor areas.
When a cruise ship's casinos are not running while still at port or not yet in international waters, cigarettes cannot be smoked in enclosed spaces. Heald also mentioned many casinos function as muster stations during the embarkation stage.
