Buffalo Bills part ways with offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey after tough loss to MNT
The Buffalo Bills fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey following a 24-22 loss to the Denver Broncos on "Monday Night Football."
The Bills' record dropped to 5-5, and if the regular season ended today, Buffalo would miss the playoffs.
I'm still confident, but it's no secret, time is ticking," quarterback Josh Allen said."We have to have urgent matters now. "
The Bills are looking to add variety as they have the toughest schedule in the NFL with eight games remaining. Four of the next five opponents are last season's playoff teams.
According to Upshot's playoff projections, the Bills have a 19% chance of making the playoffs and just a 1% chance of winning the Super Bowl.
According to one DraftKings bet, the Bills have a +200 chance of making the playoffs and a -250 chance of missing the playoffs.
Bill Mafia Beats Dorsey
Dorsey spent five seasons as quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers before joining Sean McDermott's Bills in 2019. In 2021, he was promoted to passing game coordinator.
The Bills haven't been the offensive juggernaut they once were since former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll left Buffalo to take over as head coach of the New York Giants before the start of last season.
Dorsey was the quarterbacks coach under Daboll. When Daboll left, the Bills promoted him to offensive coordinator and hired Joe Brady as interim offensive coordinator. Brady served as quarterbacks coach under Dorsey the past two seasons.
Brady has some experience as an offensive coordinator. He spent two seasons as the Carolina Panthers OC in 2021-22 under former head coach Matt Rhule.
Buffalo’s Scoring Problem
The Bills are off to a 3-1 start, averaging 38 points in their first three wins. Bill has a record of 2 wins and 4 losses in the last six games, averaging 21 points per game. They haven't averaged more than 25 points per game since Week 4.
The Bills have a 13-3 record in 2022 and the second-ranked offense last season, averaging 28.4 points per game. In 2023, the Bills ranked eighth at 26.2 points per game.
The Bills defense has struggled this season, with multiple starters missing due to injuries. They relied on their offense to win games, but Allen and the offense didn't deliver in key moments.
In Week 6, the Bills narrowly defeated the New York Giants, who fielded a backup quarterback after Daniel Jones suffered a neck injury. The Bills defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by six points in Week 8 on "Thursday Night Football."
The Bills also lost to two losing teams last month in which they were the betting favorite by more than a touchdown. They lost by eight points against the New England Patriots in Week 7, but fell by four. They opened the series as a 7.5-point favorite against the Broncos on Monday night, but fell by two.
The Collapse of the Multinational Force
The Bills set an ugly tone when they fumbled on their first play from scrimmage on their first possession against the Broncos on Monday night. The Broncos took a 3-0 lead with just one field goal.
The Bills' next three plays resulted in two punts and an interception. They trailed 9-0 and ended up getting on the scoreboard with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
In the final two possessions of the first half, the Broncos scored two more goals and led 15-8 at halftime.
Midway in the third quarter, running back Latavious Murray scored his second touchdown of the game as the Bills tied the game at 15-15.
Shortly after, Denver quarterback Russell Wilson threw a touchdown pass with less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Broncos failed to attempt a two-point conversion but led 21-15.
With 1 minute and 55 seconds left in the game, Allen scored a touchdown and the Bills regained the lead. Then their defense couldn't stop the Broncos on the game's final possession.
Broncos kicker Will Lutz missed a potentially game-winning 41-yard field goal, but the Bills were criticized for having too many players on the field. The ball moved five yards and Lutz kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired to win the game. The Broncos won 24-22.
Teams continue to struggle to score in prime time games this season. For the second straight week, the point totals in all three televised night games were lower than expected. The Broncos/Bills total is 47.5 points over/under in Week 10's Monday Night Football matchup. The Unders win again and the Primetime Unders are now 25-7.
Bills fall on the futures market
The Bills will host the New York Jets in Week 11 and travel to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 12 before getting a bye in Week 13.
The Jets beat the Bills in overtime in Week 1 after Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles on the first series. The Eagles now have the best record in the NFL at 8-1. After saying goodbye, the Bills return to the road for three more games, including games against the Kansas City Chiefs (Week 14), Los Angeles Chargers (Week 16) and Miami Dolphins (Week 18). They play two home games in December against the Dallas Cowboys (Week 15) and the New England Patriots (Week 17).
The Bills are 1-2 in the AFC East this season and will once again play opponents across the division. They beat the Dolphins 48-20 in Week 4 but lost two close games to the Jets and Patriots.
The Dolphins (6-3) are first in the AFC East and are -450 favorites to win the division. The Bills have a +400 chance to win the AFC East. According to Upshot's projections, the Bills have a 9% chance of winning the division. During the recent downturn, the Bills' Super Bowl odds dropped to +3000. Additionally, their AFC Champions League odds dropped to +1500.
The Bills will face the Jets in Week 11, and the Greens will travel to Buffalo for a rematch. The Bills are -7 favorites. Bettors have cashed in on beating the Bills this season, who have a 3-7 point differential record.
