Commencement of Whitsun holidays. - Budget-friendly holiday destinations to consider
During the expensive times, costs for accommodations, flights, and dining soared. In 2023, international flights had an enormous increase of 48% compared to 2021, while package vacations increased by 18% in Germany and 20% abroad, and domestic hotel prices also surged by 18%.
So, what's next for 2024?
Vacationers shouldn't expect low prices
A glance at the data shows: The out-of-control rises in prices have slowed down, but vacationers cannot expect cheap prices this year either.
In the initial four months of 2024, domestic package vacations were a mere 1% cheaper compared to the previous year, while package vacations abroad increased by 5%, which aligns with the overall inflation rate.
► International flights currently cost 2% less, but still set you back with a hefty 45% more than before the crisis in 2019. Hotel accommodations in 2024 are about 4% pricier than in the same period in 2023, translating to a 21% increase since 2019.
► An in-depth study of booking data for the most popular vacation destinations during this year's Whitsun holidays by the comparison platform Check24 reveals that price hikes aren't uniform across locations. There are some regions where you can score really cheap deals.
Package holidays
The expenses for package holidays fluctuate heavily.
Tunisia and Bulgaria are excellent options if you're on a tight budget. Package vacations in both countries are three percent pricier, but the average cost per day and person is still well under 100 euros. In Turkey (101 euros) and Egypt (103 euros), you can still have a relatively inexpensive vacation.
Vacations are notably costly in the UK (an average of 152 euros per person per day), the USA (214 euros), and the Maldives (217 euros). Germany fell in the middle last year (129 euros), but it had the largest price jump (12%).
Hotels
City breaks have become notably more expensive in 2024. Hotels in Hamburg (an average of 184 euros per night), Dresden (178 euros), and Berlin (160 euros) are considerably pricier this Whitsun than in the same period last year.
If you wish to go to New York for a weekend, expect room rates to average 301 euros, in Amsterdam 219 euros, and in London 206 euros.
Apartments
Those seeking a more affordable option can also go for a vacation rental this year. Although prices have skyrocketed here as well, the cost of a single night's stay in an apartment is still considerably cheaper than that of a hotel.
Flights
If you're heading to your favorite German island, be prepared to fork out 335 euros for a round trip to Mallorca (a 17% increase). A trip to Crete this year will cost 449 euros (+7%). However, there has been a decline in prices for flights to New York and Rome.
