The Formula 1 racing world is stirring up quite the commotion off the track this year. Lewis Hamilton (39), known for his stint with Mercedes for 12 seasons, is set to switch over to Ferrari in 2025. Rumors have sustained a strong buzz that Max Verstappen (26) could be a potential successor. To add to the excitement, Sebastian Vettel (36) is even contemplating a comeback.

In more unexpected news, reports suggest that Flavio Briatore (74) could make a return to Formula 1! Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera" hints that this racing series' legend, known for introducing Michael Schumacher (55) to his first two world titles in 1994 and 1995, might take on an engagement at Alpine. Here, it's said that he would serve as a sort of special advisor, at the request of Luca de Meo (56), Renault's parent company's CEO. The two share a close bond.

To turn things around for Alpine, Briatore's primary focus: rebuilding the team and steering it out of its current dilemma. The French racing squad ranks ninth in the constructors' championship with just two points, significantly behind the first eight Grand Prix - and worse off than Sauber (zero points).

As mentioned in the media report, Briatore has already begun his work. Due to a scarcity of skilled engineers capable of designing a competitive Formula 1 car, he's had his first conversation with Adrian Newey (65). The aerodynamics virtuoso of Formula 1, leaving the world champion team Red Bull at the end of the season, has caught the attention of Ferrari and McLaren as well. And now, Alpine joins the race for the Brit.

Clearly, a return by Briatore would be a significant move. He was suspended by the FIA in 2009, owing to his central role in the biggest Formula 1 scandal to ever occur, infamously referred to as "Crashgate." The former Renault team boss and technical director, Pat Symonds (70), instructed their driver, Nelson Piquet Jr. (38), to cause a deliberate accident - with the intention of aiding teammate Fernando Alonso (42) to a victory. The plan worked.

While Piquet Jr. and Alonso were cleared of any wrongdoing, Briatore and Symonds had to part ways with the team. The FIA enacted a suspension on both parties, Briatore returning only after the highest French court overturned the ban following his appeal.

Briatore and Symonds had agreed with the FIA that neither would participate in Formula 1 or any other FIA-sponsored series until 2013. However, it seems that Briatore's making his way back now. Symonds resumed his role as technical director at Williams (until 2016); will Briatore follow the same path?
