Third division dinosaur demoted. - Boyd leads Halle FC's demotion to the fourth division.
For the past 12 years, the Saale club has been struggling in the 3rd division, but unfortunately, they will have to move down to the 4th division. The deciding factor was a 0-0 draw on the penultimate matchday against Arminia Bielefeld, which wasn't enough. Their relegation became official when Waldhof Mannheim beat Sandhausen 4-2 in a late afternoon game. HFC has been a part of the 3rd division continuously since 2012.
What made it even more painful was seeing former Hallen player Terrence Boyd score twice in Mannheim's win. However, it can't be denied that HFC brought this upon themselves.
The team was consistently unfit for the third division, especially in their defense, which wobbled in most matches. They let in a whopping 67 goals in just 37 games - that's definitely too many. Even the change of coach in April, with Stefan Reisinger taking over from Sreto Ristic, couldn't save Halle.
Having a win at Bielefeld on the penultimate matchday would've given HFC some sliver of hope, but unfortunately, they couldn't pull it off. Both teams showcased great gameplay before the half, with Tom Baumgart (2) and Meris Skenderovic (3) scoring for the visitors, but Jonas Kersken in goal for Bielefeld didn't let that happen. The second half saw Arminia take control, and they almost scored with a shot from Leon Schneider (52') and Fabian Klos (65'). The tide shifted back to HFC, with Marius Wörl (55) narrowly missing from a cross. In the final 15 minutes, Halle tried to regain the lead, but Deniz (75) and Dominic Baumann (79) couldn't convert their chances. In the waning moments, Henry Crostwhaite almost scored, but the ball struck the post of the Bielefeld box.
