Boyd Holds onto Eastside Cannery Gambling Permits Despite Casino Closure

The gaming company Boyd Gaming will keep its license for the Eastside Cannery Casino and Hotel for another two years, the Clark County Commission decided on Tuesday. They voted unanimously in favor of extending the license for the casino hotel located on Boulder Highway, along with the option for two six-month extensions. The current license was set to expire soon.

Eastside Cannery has been closed for over five years now, making it the only gaming venue in the Las Vegas Valley that remained shut down during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic that hasn't had any plans announced yet. Boyd Gaming, with its headquarters in Las Vegas, operates 28 gambling venues in 10 states, including 11 locations in its hometown.

Eastside Cannery's customers have been redirected to Sam's Town, another Boyd Gaming property, since the closure. Boyd informed the commission that the customers, both gaming and non-gaming, have consolidated their visits to Sam's Town. The company also stated that due to current market conditions, it's not favorable to reopen Eastside Cannery. If the demand was there, labor shortages would also make it problematic to hire enough staff to operate the venue.

Boyd acquired Eastside Cannery in 2016 as part of its $230 million purchase of Cannery Casinos, which also included the Cannery Casino Hotel in North Las Vegas.

Rival casino company Red Rock Resorts chose to permanently close Fiesta Henderson, Fiesta Rancho, and Texas Station in 2022, opting to demolish these venues and sell the real estate. Boyd hasn't indicated their intentions regarding Eastside Cannery, but considering they pay $500,000 each month to maintain the property, demolition or selling it might be a more viable option.

Commissioner Jim Gibson expressed his desire to see Eastside Cannery return to its former status, but he also acknowledged that keeping it closed is the logical choice for the time being. Before the commission's decision, he praised Boyd Gaming's commitment to maintaining the property. He stated that he believes the venue will eventually return to commercial use and become an important part of Boyd Gaming's operations again.
