Boston Red Sox strike a deal with MGM.

The Boston Red Sox, a prominent US baseball team stationed in Boston, Massachusetts, signed a multi-year sports betting deal with the Las Vegas-based casino company MGM Resorts International. This makes the Red Sox the first hockey team in Major League Baseball (MLB) to partner with a casino and gaming firm. Read on to explore what's included in this agreement in more detail.

Visible Signage on Fenway Park

The Boston Red Sox, a legendary baseball club, has teamed up with the casino mogul MGM Resorts International for a multi-year sports betting partnership. This partnership makes MGM the exclusive casino resort partner of the Boston Red Sox. In this deal, MGM's brand visibility is planned both behind home plate and on the notorious Green Monster obstacle at Fenway Park, the home stadium.

To be more specific, MGM's brand presence will become a part of this iconic landmark. This will make MGM and the Boston Red Sox one of the most unique combinations in American baseball.

MGM Airtime on Red Sox Radio

The agreement also includes granting MGM its own airtime on Red Sox Radio, the team's in-house radio station. Not only will this partnership showcase MGM on the radio, it will extend to all of the Red Sox's media platforms as well. Moreover, during the Baseball Winter Weekend event, MGM will offer "special advertising experiences" for fans and sports bettors to enjoy at Fenway Park.

Sam Kennedy, President and CEO of the Boston Red Sox, spoke on this partnership. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with MGM, which has made an impression on the hospitality and entertainment industry. He said, "We're excited to welcome MGM to the Boston Red Sox family and are looking forward to a long-standing relationship."

MGM's CEO Jim Murren voiced his support for the partnership, believing it would boost growth across the country by creating a unique fan experience both in New England and elsewhere. He added, "The alliance between the iconic Red Sox and MGM Resorts brands will create an unforgettable baseball and fan experience, both in New England and around the nation. We're thrilled to expand our partnerships in the professional sports world as we build on our success as a leading entertainment company."

Successful Track Record

Notably, the Boston Red Sox have secured a place as one of the most successful baseball clubs in the US. Established in 1893, the team has been playing in the Eastern Division of the American League since 1969 and has won the World Series nine times in total (1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, 2013, 2018). The Red Sox are also the American League champions 14 times: 1903, 1904, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1946, 1967, 1975, 1986, 2004, 2007, 2013, 2018.

What makes this deal more significant for MGM is the Red Sox's vast and widespread fanbase. The Boston Herald reported that the Red Sox have the second-largest fan club network in North America, dubbed “Red Sox Nation.”

MGM's New Partnerships in the US

Since the legalization of sports betting in the United States last May, MGM has been striking various partnerships for the vast US market, which is predicted to be worth billions. Currently, eight US states have regulated sports betting: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Mississippi.

As part of a sponsorship deal struck with the MLB in early March, MGM is also venturing into the Japanese market, the second-largest baseball market outside North America. MGM announced that it had formed MGM Japan as they strategize to promote their brand in Japan.

To further expand its presence, MGM has inked a sports betting deal with the NHL. This agreement grants MGM control over all rights to the NHL's game data, as well as trademarks. This means that MGM will represent the NHL on any of their local media platforms, and share their marketing concept in a more focused way.

In a bid to optimize data analysis and ensure integrity, MGM inked a deal with Sportradar AG, a renowned Swiss sports data service provider, at the beginning of this month. The partnership covers processing data from all regulated markets where Sportradar has existing deals with sports teams and leagues.

It can be concluded that MGM is on its way to becoming a major player in the newly legalized US sports betting sector. The future developments are eagerly awaited.
