Boring Company's Latest Vegas Loop Tunnel Connects to Virgin Hotels.
A new tunnel for The Boring Company's (TBC) Vegas Loop project has reached the former Hard Rock Hotel (now Virgin Hotels) 1.5 miles east of Las Vegas' iconic Strip. Elon Musk, TBC's founder and the wealthiest person in the United States, shared the milestone on the company's X/Twitter account. He envisioned a time when passengers will be able to travel to all major destinations in the city quickly using electric cars within tunnels, although the current average speed is just 30 mph.
The tunnel is being dug as part of the University Center Drive Loop, which started in a 2-acre plot of land near University of Nevada Las Vegas' (UNLV) Thomas & Mack Center on Paradise Road. This site will later be known as Paradise Station. TBC purchased the land for this project in January for $7.2 million.
The longest tunnel to date, digging will continue until it reaches the Las Vegas Convention Center's Silver Lot. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), which commissioned the Vegas Loop in May 2019, passengers should be able to travel underground between the three locations by April 2025.
Almost There... But Not Quite
Despite the close proximity to Harry Reid International Airport, Paradise Station won't connect to it.
A separate expansion, approved by the Clark County Commission in October 2021, will begin at the airport and proceed to Allegiant Stadium. The route will then cover 50 other stations before ending after 30 miles at the Fremont Street Experience downtown. In the meantime, Teslas may need to use surface streets to connect with the airport.
"You can go to the airport, drop somebody off, pick somebody up, and get back into the system," LVCVA president and CEO Steve Hill said in April. "At this point, it really starts to be a valuable and viable transportation system for everybody that's connected."
Construction on the only currently operational TBC tunnel, which links the three halls of the convention center with Resorts World, is still ongoing. The next casino resorts to be connected via this loop will be the Westgate and Encore. As of now, rides on this loop are free, but when the University Center loop opens, passengers will have to pay a fee to use TBC's services.
