Leaderless, Unprotected, and Despairing. - Bochum's mentality nears its conclusion.

VFL Bochum experiences a disappointing loss at home in the first leg of the relegation play-offs against Fortuna Dusseldorf, with a score of 0-3. Many fans are skeptical about a potential turnaround in the second leg.

The big query: What's causing VFL Bochum to perform poorly during the most crucial phase of the season?

While it's undeniable that VFL was unlucky with Hofmann's own goal and the Bernardo header on the counter-attack, and that Fortuna capitalized on their weaknesses effectively, the question remains - how can a team that defeated Bayern and Stuttgart this season suddenly look so flat and disorganized?

Despite these unfortunate incidents, it's worth considering that this team appears mentally drained!

This season has been a rollercoaster for VFL, filled with ups and downs and a dragged-out narrative for the Pott Club.

There were close calls when VFL lost points due to late-game goals on matchdays 9, 17, and 20. Adding to the frustration were questionable refereeing decisions in Freiburg and Gladbach.

Then there was the league finale. VFL initially won against Darmstadt but then let a 2-0 victory slip away in the last minutes in Cologne.

Exhausting: VFL had to rally back time and again. Their game works best when everyone is confident and fully committed. Thanks to some behind-the-scenes efforts, they managed to score two wins against Hoffenheim and Union, but it was their last effort.

By the 34th matchday in Bremen, it was evident that VFL couldn't push harder. Facial expressions and body language conveyed: We want to! But the despondency manifested in everything else was: We can't!

No recognizable game plan, no more enthusiasm. Adding to the pressure was the distraction caused by Manuel Riemann's sacking (at 35). Efforts to revive the team and bring them back into form failed repeatedly.

In the end, this exhausting season took away VFL's most essential tool - their belief.

With VFL in a dire situation, the faith they so desperately needed for a miracle in the second leg is gone...
