Battle for survival in demotion zone - Bochum removes the team's captain!
Bochum is about to play the crucial games of the season - a relegation battle against Düsseldorf. In tonight's first leg at 8:30 pm (Sky and Sat.1), the team's captain is shockingly not in the starting lineup.
Anthony Losilla (38), who has played in all 31 Bundesliga matches this season unless injured or suspended, is just on the bench. Matus Bero (28) steps in for the captain.
The gossip mill at VfL is churning out stories: Losilla is a close pal of Manuel Riemann (35), the team's goalkeeper. Riemann was kicked out of the squad amid some drama this week as he reportedly no longer wanted to follow the same path.
After Riemann's dismissal, Losilla commented, "Manu is a fantastic player for VfL Bochum. We're lucky to have a player of his caliber."
Will he be forced to watch the game from the sidelines?
No, insists VfL's management. The decision is simply a sporting one.
Coach Heiko Butscher (43) shares the news on Sky, "Toto is completely on board with this, he'll still be crucial. That speaks volumes about him, he's an exceptional captain."
Time will tell if this decision - and the one on Riemann - was the right course of action.
