Exceptional dessert reaches a new high - Black Forest cake dominates globally
The Cherry of the Black Forest Wins Over the World!
It may sound surprising, but a chocolate cake drenched in alcohol, topped with cream, and decorated with cherries is a huge hit with food enthusiasts across the globe.
And the number of amateurs giving this dessert a try has been rapidly increasing. Google searches for "Black Forest gateau" have nearly doubled in recent years, with most searches being for a recipe.
But who created it?
The Birth of the Black Forest gateau in Bad Godesberg
This delightful confection is believed to have originated in Bad Godesberg. Joseph Keller, a Swabian pastry chef, sold his world-famous creation at Café Agner in 1915.
Keller used to serve cream and cherries at the café during the summer months, which was a favorite among students. One day, he came up with the idea of turning this dessert into a cake. He mixed cream and cherries with a cake base that had been soaked in Black Forest kirsch and topped the whole thing with chocolate shavings. Thus, the Black Forest gateau was born.
The Global Returns of Black Forest kirsch
This calorie-heavy cake has become a sensation across the world. In Trinidad, they soak chocolate cake in high-proof rum and top it with whipped cream. In Pakistan, they add cherry brandy to the cake, while in Chile, fresh cherries are a must. The New York Times reports that the dessert is also popular in Nepal, Fiji, and Zimbabwe. Chileans even eat Black Forest kirsch without alcohol.
Sanjeev Kapoor, a celebrated Indian chef, shared his favorite Black Forest gateau recipe on Instagram.
For Valentine's Day 2022, M&M's introduced a special edition of "Black Forest gateau." Their website also has a recipe for "Schwarzwälder Kirsch Happen."
An Entry in the "Guinness Book of Records"
This cake is not only a global phenomenon; it has also made its way into the "Guinness Book of Records." In 2006, during the "Black Forest Experience Day" at Europa-Park Rust, 13 pastry chefs created the world's largest Black Forest gateau.
The list of ingredients: 5,600 eggs, 800 kilograms of cherries, 700 liters of cream, more than 1,000 kilograms of dough, 40 kilograms of chocolate shavings, and 110 liters of kirsch. This 80-square-meter cake, weighing 2,963 kilograms, was cut into 16,000 pieces and devoured by visitors.
A Festival for the Black Forest gateau
The globally popular dessert is now celebrated every two years in Todtnauberg, Baden-Württemberg, with the "Black Forest Gateau Festival." Both amateur and professional bakers compete in cake baking based on craftsmanship, appearance, and taste. A jury selects the winning cake.
